Fall is my favorite season. Cashmere sweaters, wool jackets, suede boots and rich colors like cognac, radiant orchid and cypress are some of the things that come to mind when I think of Autumn. While the season technically begins in late September, the unofficial start to the Fall begins after Labor Day. The air, of course, can still feel thick enough to cut. So much for being able to wear all the beautiful Fall clothes in September in the South! What’s the stylish woman (or man) to do?
While there are no hard and fast rules, and there is no “fashion police”, here are some of my recommendations:
Colors: The bright colors of summer can be put away. Your white jeans can be paired with rich neutrals like camel, grey and cypress. Switch to mid-rinse jeans or even dark rinse if paired with a dark top. Grey pants are a nice neutral for Fall. When the temperature dips in the evening, add a jacket.
Fabrics: Put away the linen and wear cotton, modal, lightweight tropical wool, etc. until it’s time to pull out the heavier wool and cashmere.
Shoes: Sandals work just fine for a few weeks longer as long as it’s a Fall sandal. I suggest putting away your cork and raffia heels and switching to leather or suede shoes with wood, suede and leather heels. Peep toes and sling backs are also a nice transition.
Cover up: Put away the spaghetti straps. Sleeveless tops and dresses will be cool while looking more like Fall.
